Jackie Gleason

Comedian, actor, composer and conductor, educated in New York public schools. Jackie Gleason (February 26, 1916 – June 24, 1987) was a master of ceremonies in amateur shows, a carnival barker, daredevil driver, a disc jockey and later a comedian in night clubs. He designed his own fantastic round house that was built in Peekskill, New York, in the 1950s and remains a modern marvel. The set of "The Honeymooners" (1955) show was based on Jackie's childhood home on Chauncey Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant (originally Bushwick) area of Brooklyn, New York. The apartment building is still there and looks very much the same as in Jackie's time.

W.C. Handy

W. C. Handy, age 19

William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 – March 28, 1958) was a blues composer and musician. He was widely known as the "Father of the Blues". Handy remains among the most influential of American songwriters. Though he was one of many musicians who played the distinctively American form of music known as the blues, he is credited with giving it its contemporary form. Handy was an educated musician who used folk material in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from several performers. He loved this folk musical form and brought his own transforming touch to it.

William Carney

William Carney, May 23, 1900, William was born a slave. He managed to escape from slavery during the Civil War. He joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and obtained the rank of Sergeant. He participated in the historic Assault on Fort Wagner, which was one of the first major battles in which Union Forces used Black Troops in the Civil War. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteers, and their assault on Fort Wagner was the subject of the movie "Glory". This move came out some time ago, but is truly an inspirational film. William Carney became the first Black man to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was honored for his heroism at the Assault on Fort Wagner.

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman, (born Araminta Harriet Ross; Feb.-Mar. 1822 – March 10, 1913), was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, Union spy during the American Civil War and born into slavery1820, in Dorchester County, Maryland, Edward Brodas plantation. Harriet Tubman was a runaway slave from Maryland who became known as the "Moses of her people." Over the course of 10 years, and at great personal risk, she led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses where runaway slaves could stay on their journey north to freedom. She later became a leader in the abolitionist movement, and during the Civil War she was a spy with for the federal forces in South Carolina as well as a nurse.Between 1850 and 1858, she helped more than 300 slaves reach freedom.

Canada Lee

Canada Lee, (March 3, 1907 — May 9, 1952) was an American actor who pioneered roles for African Americans. A champion of civil rights in the 1930s and 1940s, he died shortly before he was scheduled to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. (Lee has signed and inscribed this fine sepia toned photograph, stamped on verso, "A. Steiner Photographer...." "To my sister Helen Martin From her brother 'Bigger' Canada Lee.")

Henkie Klein

Little Henkie Klein (sometimes written as Klyn or Kleinman) was a child actor in German and Dutch films of the silent era. He was born in 1921 in Amsterdam and was the son of film director Henk Kleinman.  Henkie had made his film debut as the Berlin street boy Bolleken in Goldjunge/Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (1925, Henk Kleinman). Both films are now presumed missing. (More information on Henkie Klein was not to be found on the net. If he is still alive, he would be now 86 or 87).

Delia Magaña

Delia Magaña (February 2, 1903 – March 31, 1996) was a Mexican film and television actress, singer, and dancer. Although she started as a silent film actress, Magaña became best known for her comic supporting roles in her later years. For her 60 years in the film industry, as well as for contributing to the American cinema, Magaña's name and hand print are preserved in the sidewalk outside Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California.
