Ann Sothern (born Harriet Arlene Lake, January 22, 1909 – March 15, 2001) was an American film and television actress whose career spanned six decades. Her film career started as an extra-bit part in the film Broadway Nights in 1927. Ann got her break with Columbia Pictures when they signed her to a contract in 1934. Her first role for Columbia was in the film The Party's Over (1934).

Our Neighbor, Miss Yae (Shimazu, 1934)

Our Neighbor, Miss Yae (Shimazu, 1934) is a delightful comedy/drama about the friendship between two neighboring families set in contemporary suburban Japan. The plot concerns a love triangle between a law student who “looks like Frederic March” and the two sisters next door, one of whom is newly separated from her husband. In a lot of ways, this feels like the most modern (and westernized) Japanese movie of its era – the characters play baseball, watch a Betty Boop cartoon and engage in hilarious, flirtatious banter. The exchanges between the law student and the younger sister in particular (the Miss Yae of the title) are highly memorable and infectiously fun.

 Margot Webb and Harold Norton performed on the Afro-American vaudeville circuits of night clubs and theaters in the Northeast and the Midwest during 1933 - 1940s. Known professionally as” Norton and Margot,” they were one of the few Afro-American ballroom. This publicity photo was signed “To the sweetest Aunt in the world, My Marion, Lovingly Margot, 1934”.
